Cuboid Syndrome

Cuboid syndrome is a relativly common injury in those who run for fitness and training. It is caused when the cuboid bone is unstable and not locked into place. When the lateral leg muscles, the peroneal muscles contract, the tendons that use the cuboid as its pulley try and sublux it or move it out of place. This movement strains the calacneo-cuboid joint. Those runners with a flat are much more likely to get cuboid syndrome. Poor running shoes are also thought to be a factor in cuboid syndrome.

A common symptom of this is an ache on the outside of the foot that gets worse with increased phsyical activity. Treatment should be started immediatly and it it is not started then the pain gets progressively worse and to the stage where it usually interupts the running.

The usual treatment is usually some sort of pain relief with medication and ice. Cuboid manipulation is usually need to put the subluxed cuboid that has moved, back into its place. Often strapping is used to help stabilize the cuboid so there is less strain on the joints. After that foot orthotics are usually needed long term to help support the foot and make the cuboid bone more stable.
