Sinus Tarsi Syndrome
Sinus tarsi syndrome is a problem of the ankle joint that causes pain on the outside of the joint. The sinus tarsi is a small tunnel between the talus and calcaneus bones in the rearfoot. Pain can occur when the structures inside this tunnel get compressed or stretched. The structures can get compressed in a flat or pronated foot and this can cause sinus tarsi syndrome. The structures can also get stretched during an ankle sprain and this can cause sinus tarsi syndrome. The former case is best managed with foot orthotics and the later is best managed with physical therapy.
Without proper management, both causes of sinus tarsi syndrome can become chronic and lead to long term problems
