Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain and is the most common musculoskeletal problem seen in the foot. It is a strain or degeneration of the plantar fascia which is a strong band that holds up the arch of the foot. The plantar fascia forms part of the windlass mechanism of the foot.

The main symptom of plantar fasciitis is pain at the bottom of the heel that is worse when getting out of bed in the morning.

There are several causes of plantar fasciitis, with the most common being a high bodyweight, tight calf muscles and a flat or pronated foot.

Given the causes of plantar fasciitis, then it’s not surprising that the treatment is losing weight, stretching the calf muscles and the use of foot orthotic for the flat foot. Low dye strapping or tape is often used initially, as well as a reduction in how much activity is carried out, like sitting more at work or cutting back on sports activity. There are many other treatments for plantar fasciitis such as cortisone shots, shockwave therapy, etc. They are all useful to help healing, but the above really need to be carried out first or these other treatments are destined to fail.
